People

Peter Earl

Executive Director

Peter Earl began his career at the Boston Consulting Group Inc. advising state-owned companies. In 1994 he acted on secondment to the World Bank and UNDP in Bolivia. He has advised governments on privatisations in Latin America and Eastern Europe having served as Deputy Chairman for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe infrastructure finance group. He became a director of Fieldstone Private Capital Group in London in 1994, where he advised on cross-border power sector acquisitions and bids totalling approximately US$6 billion, involving 5,000 MW of installed generating capacity. In 1995 he founded Independent Power Corporation PLC and is also a director of IPSA Group PLC. He is an Oxford University graduate and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University.

Elizabeth R. Shaw

Executive Director

Elizabeth Shaw has been involved in the electricity sector since 1994 when she joined Fieldstone Private Capital Group. Between 1994 and 2000, as a director of Fieldstone, she advised on a number of mergers, acquisitions and disposals in the electricity industry, both in the UK and in developing markets. She joined Independent Power Corporation PLC as a director in 2000 where she is responsible for business development and finance. She is a director and founder of IPSA Group PLC. She is also an executive director of Strategic Natural Resources PLC. She is a graduate of Exeter University.

Susan Laker

Executive Director

Company Secretary and General Counsel

Ms. Laker joined IPC as an Executive Director and is responsible for legal affairs. Ms. Laker was previously with Bird and Bird, a leading London solicitor, where she was responsible for a number of power sector flotations and takeovers. For the previous 10 years, Ms. Laker was responsible for business development in China for Racal Electronics PLC. In addition, she has advised the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on trade with China. Ms. Laker obtained a first class honors degree at the London School of Oriental and African Studies as well as the Robert Sterling Clark fellowship to Taiwan National University and a Kennedy Scholarship to Harvard.

Colin Emson

Chairman & Non-Executive Director

Co-founding partner in 1967 of the specialist tax, insurance, investment consultancy and financial marketing firm, Emson & Dudley. He has been the Managing Director of the Robert Fraser Group since 1979, dealing with commercial loans and merchant banking, corporate finance, Lloyds of London insurance broking, property investment hotel and development finance. He has also been Chairman of Sterling Trust Ltd. since its acquisition in 1989.

Phil Metcalf

Executive Director

Phil Metcalf has spent the last 25 years as a respected Executive in the energy, telecommunications and construction sectors in management and programme management roles of large and complex infrastructure projects. Prior to joining IPC he was responsible for development and commercialization of Pelamis Wave Power and Operations Director for Stone & Webster Engineering specializing in Emerging Markets.  He has an Engineering Science degree from Durham University.

Andy Ruhan

Non-Executive Director

Founder of Kingspark in the early 90s, one of the largest developers of commercial premises in the UK. Later that year, Andy joined forces with his brother, Gabriel, who had spent several years in the technology sector, and formed Global Switch, the world's largest carrier-neutral colocation company. After a period of successful and rapid expansion, 66% of the company was sold for $200m in March 2000.The following year Andy was the recipient of the prestigious Ernst & Young Emerging Entrepreneur of the year award. He is currently the Chairman and CEO of Bridgehouse Capital Limited.

Mike Eyre

Head of Engineering

Mike is both a Chartered and European Engineer with over 30 years experience in project management and development in the power sector. As a CEGB engineer, Mike spent part of his early career on secondment to Eskom of South Africa. During the Privatisation of the UK electricity industry, he was Head of Engineering Quality with National Power. In 1996, he established a joint venture between National Power PLC and Lloyd's Register, a project development and risk management business for IPP's and the London Insurance industry. Mike was invited in 1997 by the UN Secretary General of the Rio Earth Summit to join the UN Emissions Trading Policy Forum. He is also a director of IPSA and managing director of IPC's operations subsidiary Independent Power Operations Limited.
